Preparing your car for winter: what to do while it is still warm

The first frost asks nobody's permission. Tyres, battery, oil, washer fluid and a few more jobs that September makes easy and October turns into queues.

A car on a snow-covered road on a freezing morning

Before the frost arrives, five main things deserve attention: tyres with at least 4 mm of tread, a battery health check, thinner oil for easier starts, winter windshield washer fluid and rubber seals treated with silicone. Smaller jobs, such as washing the body or checking the coolant, are also easiest done in August and September. Then the first cold morning becomes just another morning.

Sort the tyres out first

For winter the safe tread limit is 4 mm, not the legal summer minimum of 1.6 mm. Spin a wheel and look how much depth remains at the bottom. Running low? Now is the best time to order new ones: until October they usually cost less and the choice is wider. After the first frosts the very same fitting appointment takes a week of waiting in line.

Test the battery now, not on a freezing morning

A cold morning tells the whole truth about a battery, but why wait for it? A workshop will measure charge retention and starter currents in five minutes. In Lithuania a battery lives about 4-6 years, so if yours is older and already produced hesitant starts in summer, replace it while the weather is mild.

Thin oil, real antifreeze, frost-proof washer fluid

The number before the W in an oil grade describes its behaviour in frost. 0W or 5W reaches every corner of the engine quickly; 10W or 15W in severe cold leaves the engine almost unlubricated for the first long seconds. The cents saved do not cover that risk.

The cooling system needs a genuine winter antifreeze mix. Water or an over-diluted fluid freezes and can crack the radiator or the engine block; a small tester costing a couple of euros shows the real freezing point.

Summer windshield fluid freezes through in a single night of frost, so pour in winter-grade, rated to -30, already now. In winter your first job is seeing the road, and a frozen reservoir stops that.

Visibility and cabin care come from small jobs

Dirty headlights lose up to a third of their light after dark, and autumn days shorten anyway, so check them all before the season, from indicators to brake lights. For misted windows the decisive instrument is the air conditioner: switched on together with the heating it dries the air, and the glass clears within seconds. Repair a failing system before the frosts, not after.

Treat door and boot seals with silicone grease: doors stop sticking to their frames, seals hold warmth longer and pass less moisture. And one last job that looks odd but repays itself handsomely is winter washing. Road salt is the main cause of body rust, so a few times per season, while temperatures stay above zero, wash the car including the underside and wheel arches.

Long trips deserve an assembled kit

A torch, a warning triangle reflector vest, a warm blanket, water and some snacks weigh little yet earn their place during hours stuck in a queue. Heavy snowstorms are rare in Lithuania, but when they come, road services do not clear every route at once.

If you plan to change cars this winter, the season suits it better than most people assume. A cold start and winter driving reveal more about a car than any summer walk-around with the window open; our buying checklist works for that too. Dealership cars by then are already prepared for winter with tyres fitted and systems checked. Prices normally climb in spring, so browse the search now rather than postponing it to April.
